Hoosac Starts Strong with Win over Taconic

ADAMS, Mass — The defense of the Hoosac Valley girls' basketball team came to play right from the start, while the offense received points from eight different players in the Hurricanes' 51-40 season-opening win over Taconic on Monday night.

Freshman forward Emily Rosse led a balanced scoring attack for Hoosac, netting a team-high 14 points to go along with nine rebounds. Sophomore Megan Rodowicz also came through with eight points, seven boards and three assists for the 'Canes, who held the Braves (0-2) to just 13 points in the first half on their way to a nine-point lead at the break.

"I thought we had great defensive intensity and forced Taconic to play our up and down style and took them out of their offense," Hoosac head coach Ron Wojick said. "However, we were way to sloppy on the offensive end with too many turnovers, and we need to do a better job from the foul line.  Our defense was decent for the first game out with many young players, but we need to clean up things on the offensive end."

The Hurricanes made only 11 of the 24 free-throws they attempted in the game. Even with a few missed opportunities at the line, Hoosac outscored the Braves in every quarter except the fourth, opening up a 39-24 lead after at the end of the third. Kristi Geary led Taconic with a game-high 15 points, while Lily Henderek chipped in with 10.

The 'Canes are back in action on Wednesday, when they host rival Drury at 7:30 p.m.
