McCann's Offense Stuggles against Hampshire

WESTHAMPTON, Mass — The offense of the McCann Tech girls' basketball team has hit a bit of a dry spell as of late, resulting in the Hornets dropping their second straight game courtesy of a 48-33 road loss to Hampshire on Tuesday night.

The Hornets (3-8) couldn't get on track on the offensive end, scoring just six points a quarter before breaking out for a 15-point burst in the final frame. That gave the Red Raiders plenty of time to build a big lead. Hampshire led 18-6 after the first quarter before cruising into the the half with a 31-12 cushion.

"We came out cold in the first half of the game," McCann head coach Kristen Lewis said. "There were a lot of fouls not being called both ways, making the game very dangerous. My girls became frustrated with the lack of calls and the fact that we were having a difficult time getting our offense started. Hampshire had a strong aggressive defense and all their players could shoot the ball. We played a zone, but it was hard for us to contain their shooters, as they seemed to be everywhere."

Anna Dziok was the Raiders' hottest shooter, sinking three shots from behind the arc on her way to a game-high 13 points. Laura Whiteley also added 10 points for Hampshire, which carried a 42-18 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

"The girls played hard and never gave up," Lewis said. "We came out in the second half with a vengeance and ready to play after discussing how we couldn't change the lack of calls on the floor. We only could control our game. In the fourth quarter, we started to get into an offensive groove, but it was too late in the game to compensate for how far behind we were. We play again tomorrow against St. Joe's and are looking forward to continuing our intensity and rallying to a win."

Junior guard Mary Nguyen scored 11 points and grabbed three rebounds to lead McCann. Senior forward Cassie Field also notched 10 points for the Hornets, who play at the Crusaders at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
