WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- After a tough part of the schedule led to a four-game losing streak, the Mount Greylock girls' basketball team was in desperate need of a win to keep its postseason hopes alive on Thursday night. Thanks to a scoring outburst by freshman Lucy Barrett and some very solid defense for three quarters of play, the Mounties got the win they needed in the form of a 49-39 home victory over Monument Mountain.

Barrett was the only player to score in double figures, leading Greylock (5-8) with a game-high 17 points to go along with six rebounds and two assists. Barrett hit two of the Mounties' five 3-pointers on the night, helping the hosts earn a decisive 15-3 scoring edge in that category.

The game was pretty much all defense in the first half, with Greylock leading 17-12 at the break. Paul Barrett's club took control in the third quarter, however, outscoring the Spartans 12-5 in the frame. The offenses of both teams got hot in the fourth quarter, though, leading to a 41-point outburst in the final eight minutes of the game. Despite putting up 21 points in the fourth quarter, which was three more than it had scored in the first three quarters combined, Monument (2-11) was unable to cut into the Mounties' double-digit lead.

"We were able to handle the pressure of Monument and persevered in the fourth quarter to earn the victory," Barrett said.

Junior forward Alex Majetich had a good overall game for Greylock, scoring nine points, dishing out a team-high eight assists and grabbing four boards. Seniors Sierra Holland and Caitie Benoit also chipped in with nine and eight points, respectively.

Lindsay Cavanaugh and Vanessa Troiano each scored eight points to lead the Spartans. The Mounties next host Taconic for a 7 p.m. game on Tuesday night.
