LENOX, Mass — The shooting strokes of the Mount Greylock girls' basketball team only showed up for one half in its game on Friday, resulting in a 58-47 road loss to Lenox.
Greylock (5-10) struggled with turnovers and hurried possessions in the first half, resulting in a 17-8 deficit after the first quarter. The Millionaires, who improved to 11-4 with the win, increased their lead to 32-13 at the half before the Mounties' offense kicked into high gear after the break. The visitors only shaved one point off of Lenox's lead after three quarters but made a run in the fourth, closing within the 10-point range several times before the hosts' defense tightened up to earn the win.
"Lenox came out strong in the first half, and we struggled to get going," Greylock head coach Paul Barrett said. "Although we only gained a single point in the third quarter, the momentum seemed to have shifted our way. After Lenox put back in all of its starters, the game was a war for the final four minutes. We had numerous possessions with the possibility of trimming the deficit to single digits, but the Lenox defense neutralized the attack and stalemated the comeback."
Freshman guard Lucy Barrett was one of the Mounties' players who got hot on the offensive end. She ended up sinking five 3-pointers on the night on her way to a game-high 20 points. Senior forward Sierra Holland also drained three triples on the night to finish with 12 points, while classmate Caitie Benoit chipped in with five points, five rebounds and five assists.
Hayden Zinchuk led the Millionaires offense with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while teammate Liz Mitts finished with 12 points.
Greylock next plays at McCann Tech at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
