Recap for the game: Hoosac Valley vs Lenox on Feb 18
Hurricanes Can't Hang with Millionaires
10:15AM / Saturday, February 25, 2012
PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- The good news for the Hoosac Valley girls' basketball team is that Saturday's loss to Lenox in the Coaches vs. Cancer Showcase did not cost the Hurricanes a share of the South Division title. The bad news is Hoosac won't be able earn a share of the league title if it plays the same way it did in the rematch between the two teams in Tuesday's season finale.
The Millionaires earned their second convincing win over the Hurricanes this season, using a 10-2 run to start the third quarter to pull away for 48-31 win at Pittsfield High School. Lenox (15-4) started game strong, earning a 17-7 lead by the end of the first quarter. Hoosac (13-6) hung tough in the second quarter but still went into halftime down by nine points.
Junior guard Tori Rumbolt, who led the 'Canes with 11 points and three assists, then scored the first bucket of the third quarter and was fouled on the play. She ended up missing the free throw, however, and the Millionaires quickly responded with a finish on the other end by Jaclyn Gigliotti (eight points). That started a 10-0 run for Lenox, which built its lead to 37-20 heading into the fourth quarter.
"We were totally outplayed by Lenox tonight," Hoosac head coach Ron Wojcik said. "We did not show up to play."
Liz Mitts scored a game-high 14 points to lead the Millionaires, who also received eight points and two assists from Hayden Zinchuk. Freshman forward Emily Rosse had a solid game for the Hurricanes, finishing with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
The two teams meet again in Adams at 7:30 on Tuesday night. If Lenox wins, it will finish the season with a perfect 8-0 record in league play and clinch the South Division outright. If Hoosac comes out on top, both teams will have a 7-1 league record and share the title.
