'Canes Rebound with Big Win over Taconic

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- The Hoosac Valley girls' basketball team had a bad taste in its mouth after a lopsided loss to rival Drury on Monday. Led by the sweet shooting of junior Jenn Gale, the Hurricanes had a much better experience in a 68-41 win over Taconic on Thursday.

Gale busted out for a season-high 19 points against the Braves, scoring 15 of those points by draining five shots from behind the 3-point line. Hoosac (8-3) also got a good game from sophomore center Emily Rosse, who finished with 15 points and eight rebounds. Classmate McKenzie Robinson also sank a pair of threes on her way to scoring nine points and dishing out six assists.

"It was a good bounce back for us after a poor performance at Drury on Monday," Hurricanes head coach Ron Wojcik said. "Jen Gale was on fire tonight and, after a tight first quarter, we went on a 17-0 run in the second. We have no time to rest with Lenox in the Coaches vs. Cancer tourney on Saturday."

The Braves, who fell to 1-9 with the loss, ended a streak of hard-fought losses against quality competition. Things started off well enough for Taconic, which trailed only 14-11 at the end of the first quarter. Hoosac's big run in the second quarter blew the game open, however, and the visitors led by 17 points at halftime.

Sophomore guard Shea Hassett led the Braves' offense with 13 points. Junior guard Angela O'Neil chipped in with seven points and seven assists.

The 'Canes meet up with the Millionaires at 6:15 p.m. on Saturday. The Braves play against Monument Mountain earlier in the day at 2. Both games will be held at Taconic High School.
