Wildcats Prove to be Too Much for Mounties

LEE, Mass. -- Playing on the road against the top team in Berkshire County is a difficult challenge for an experienced team, let alone for an inexperienced squad with a lack of size. The Mount Greylock girls' basketball team put up a good effort but, in the end, Lee was just too much for the Mounties in a 56-32 win on Thursday night.

Paul Barrett's club started the game off strong, playing the Wildcats, who are undefeated in league play this year, to a 7-7 score to open the first quarter. The hosts broke off a 9-0 run to end the first, however, and kept their momentum going with a strong second quarter that gave them a 31-15 lead at the half. Lee (10-3) maintained its edge in the second half on its way to earning its 10th win of the season and a spot in the Division 3 Western Mass. tournament.

"Lee's experience proved too much for us tonight," Barrett said. "We showed some flashes of touch defense, good rebounding and nice ball movement, but it was not enough to battle relentless attacks of the Lee squad."

Senior point guard Eileen Dooley led all scorers with 16 points for the Wildcats, while classmate Stephanie Young was close behind with 14. Greylock (4-8) got 14 points and a pair of threes from sophomore guard Lucy Barrett, while junior forward Heather Tomkowicz was strong on the boards with a team-high nine rebounds.

The Mounties' schedule doesn't get any easier, with North Division power Pittsfield coming to Williamstown for a 7 p.m. game on Monday.
