Paul Hopkins, in is second term, said he is leaving the council for personal and professional reasons. Hopkins has had his home for sale for some months and had not intended to run for re-election this year.
Offices up for election are mayor for two years; nine City Council seats, also for two-year terms; three School Committee seats for four-year terms and one for three years; and two McCann School Committee seats for four years.
Up for election will be City Council seats in all seven wards and four at-large seats for two-year terms. Also on the ballot are the six School Committee seats and the city clerk, all for two-year terms.
The councilor's announcement come after the decisions of three of his colleagues not to run: Ward 2 Councilor Kevin Morandi, Ward 4 Councilor Chris Connell, and Ward 3 Councilor Nicholas Caccamo announced early this year that they would not seek re-election.
