MCLA Offers Jump Start For College

North Adams -The Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts is extending an invitation to area high school seniors to participate in the college's Courtesy Student Program, which allows students to take a class at MCLA free of charge. MCLA is offering qualified high school students an opportunity to enroll in a three-credit college level course during the upcoming fall semester at no cost [other than books] to the student or their high school. The program, which applies only to the day program, allows students to experience attending college while still in high school.This opportunity provides two benefits; the students earns three credits of MCLA coursework that will be applied to a MCLA degree and secondly, provides students with a preview of college academics. According to Denise Richardello, vice president of enrollment management and external affairs, "This is a wonderful opportunity for high school students to prepare for the rigors of a college level class environment while exploring new academic interests and strengthening their college applications. We are pleased to be continuing this innovative program." During past semesters, about 20 local high school students have participated. Students interested in applying to the Courtesy Student Program must be a Berkshire County high school senior, have achieved at minimum of a 3.0 Grade Point Average [GPA] in a college preparatory curriculum and have a recommendation from their high school guidance counselor. Senior Golf Series Returns in September

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- The Berkshire County Fall Senior Golf series returns in September with events on five consecutive Wednesdays starting Sept. 18.
 
It is the 22nd year of the series, which is a fund-raiser for junior golf in the county, and it is open to players aged 50 and up.
 
The series will feature two divisions for each event based on the combined ages of the playing partners.
 
Golfers play from the white tees (or equivalent) with participants 70 and over or who have a handicap of more than 9 able to play from the forward tees.
 
Gross and net prices will be available in each division.
 
The cost is $55 per event and includes a round of golf, food and prizes. Carts are available for an additional fee.
 
Golfers should call the pro shop at the course for that week's event no sooner than two weeks before the event to register.
