Giving Youth More Outlets to Express Themselves

Pittsfield – Youth Groups in Pittsfield are coming together to ensure their young people have an outlet to express themselves. The Pittsfield Youth Commission and Youth Alive Step Dance and Drum Line are in the process of planning a Youth Talent Show at Barrington Stage Company for March 27, open to all county teenagers, in an effort to showcase the wide variety of talent that our community has to offer.

Tryouts have begun to take place, and more are scheduled. The show already includes some incredible talent, from young rappers to pop and lock dancers, acoustic guitar players and hacky sackers. The groups are encouraging more to tryout, in hopes of including as many as possible in the show. The performances promise to highlight what Berkshire County is all about, creativity, diversity and promotion of artistic expression throughout life.

If you’ve never performed, or are a stage junkie, they are looking to see your dance, hear your songs or experience your random skills. They know there are some tight rope walkers and acrobats out there! The Youth Commission and Youth Alive hope to make the show as fun and energetic as possible, with comedy and a good natured positive energy, embracing all of our young people.

The young performers will also have the opportunity to experience Barrington Stage Company, a wonderful professional venue that invites creative and talented spirits. The Youth Commission, Youth Alive and youth throughout the county, are extremely grateful to BSC for always welcoming youth into their space and for their innovative and empowering programs.

The money raised from the talent show will go to help support Youth Alive’s new practice and hangout space on Melville Street. The show is scheduled on Friday, March 7 at 7pm. Categories include dance, singing, bands/groups and random talent. Great prizes are included thus far from Best Buy, Burger, WorkShopLive, Sante Day Spa, The Pittsfield Airport, Woodbrothers Music and Bisque Beads and Beyond, with more to come. If your organization is interested in donating a prize, please contact the Youth Commission.

Talent Show Auditions will be held from 5-7:30pm on Monday February 4 and 18 at the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts, 28 Renne Ave, Downtown Pittsfield MA. Auditions will also be held from 2:30-5pm at Pittsfield High School, directly after school on February 13th. Auditions will be held in south county and north county at the local high schools with dates and times to be decided. If you are unable to attend a current audition, or if you would like to take charge and schedule a new audition time at your school, contact the Youth Commission at 413-448-9735.

The Pittsfield Youth Commission is a new group of high school students who are working to create new opportunities for youth to get involved, through new and existing events and programs.

The goal of the Commission to become a completely representative body for young people to learn about their lives and their community, thus creating change. The Youth Commission is extremely excited to be partnering with Youth Alive for this reason, as Youth Alive is a group that is already accomplishing all of these goals. Youth Alive is a county-wide step and drumming group that consistently provides youth creative outlets for expression. They have performed at numerous different venues, allowing members to learn about their county, their country and themselves through traveling performances.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

By Brittany PolitoiBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building.

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu.

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building.

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns.

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot.

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
