Salvation Army to Honor Local Volunteers
NORTH ADAMS - The North Adams Salvation Army Corps will hold its eighth annual Northern Berkshire Community Service Recognition Dinner on Friday, April 11, at the Williams Inn in Williamstown.The guest speaker will be state Rep. Daniel E. Bosley, D-North Adams. The representative has a long history as an outspoken supporter of Northern Berkshire community outreach and volunteer efforts.
Three Northern Berkshire volunteers will be recognized by the Salvation Army Advisory Board: North Adams City Councilor Richard Alcombright, Adams Town Clerk Paul Hutchinson and Williamstown community activist Peter Mehlin have been selected for their outstanding record of volunteerism and community service.
Alcombright is involved with a wide range of community organizations and is the 2007-2008 campaign chairman for the Northern Berkshire United Way. He is senior vice president of retail banking for Hoosac Bank and Williamstown Savings Bank, and is member of the McCann School Committee.
Hutchinson serves on the boards of or as an active volunteer with many community organizations. He was campaign chairman for the Northern Berkshire United Way for two separate fundraising campaigns, 1987-88 and 1993-94.
Mehlin is a volunteer for several Williamstown organizations, including the David and Joyce Milne Public Library and the Council on Aging. He returned to Williamstown, where he grew up, after retiring from a 35-year career as a librarian with the Brooklyn (N.Y.) Public Library.
The evening will include various musical selections. The cost of the meal is $25. Tax-deductible donations in addition to that as well as from those unable to attend but who are interested in supporting the evening's efforts will be gratefully accepted.
The board will mail invitations to hundreds of past attendees throughout the area; RSVP no later than April 4.
Tickets will not be available at the door. Those who don't receive an invitation but are interested in attending or supporting the dinner may make a reservation at The Travel Store, 620 Main St., Williamstown. Call 413-458-5786 for further information.
Capts. James Eager and Mary Eager are the pastors of the Salvation Army of North Adams, which has been serving Northern Berkshire for 116 years with a wide range of programs and services. Money raised through the dinner will help support those programs and services.
