Light Festival Works Being Installed over Hoosic

The 100-foot-long design is made up of wire mesh, fabric and liquid-crystal display lights strung on a cable frame across the 45-foot wide flood control chute. The work stretches from the Holden Street bridge to Northern Berkshire District Court.
The is the most complex of the dozen or so formulated by graduate students in the light workshop at the Lighting Research Center at Renssalaer (N.Y.) Polytechnic Institute. The 20-year-old research center explores all aspects of light, from the archectural to the biological, said Patricia Rizzo, director of DesignWorks program there.
The students included artists, architects and engineers.
With the help of volunteers, students strung cables across the river and prepared the yards of mesh. The work will continue today and through the Saturday, as more artists arrive to install several more works on the east side of the bridge and west toward the Porches inn. Residents are welcome to stop by and help.
The light show is slated for Saturday night from about 6 to 11 p.m.; the rain date is Sunday.
