Simon's Rock Senior Wins Fulbright Assistantship

GREAT BARRINGTON — Ann Burchfield, a Bard College at Simon's Rock graduating senior and linguistics major, was recently awarded one of only 24 Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships to Taiwan.

The Fulbright — America’s flagship exchange program — fosters international research and collaboration, and funds scholars who demonstrate exceptional leadership potential.

"Even though I have never spent more than a day outside of the United States, languages have been my window into other cultures," said Burchfield.

The Fulbright will allow the Uvalde, Texas, resident to travel to Yilan County in northern Taiwan, where she will teach English to elementary school children and deepen her command of the Chinese language, "in a way that would be impossible at home."

After taking courses in Chinese and Arabic at Simon's Rock, her passion for linguistics surfaced — an interest that went beyond syntax and embodied a global purpose.

While Burchfield discovered her love of linguistics in college, she believes it’s crucial to engage people at a younger age.

"Students are not able to study these languages until college, when they are far past the age when language is easily acquired," she said. For this reason, and because of her sense of the vital importance of learning the Arabic language in a post-9/11 world, Burchfield developed a user-friendly, Arabic language textbook for elementary-aged children as her senior thesis project.

The Fulbright assistantship — which will fund Burchfield's yearlong work and studies abroad — allows the Simon's Rock graduate a chance to continue "breaking down language barriers," and to expand her cultural fluency in an increasingly global community.

The Fulbright Program was established in 1946 and operates in more than 140 countries worldwide. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the program has provided more than 270,000 participants with an opportunity to observe each others political, economic, educational and cultural institutions, to exchange ideas, and to embark on joint ventures of importance to the general welfare of the world.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

By Brittany PolitoiBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building.

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu.

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building.

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns.

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot.

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
