Thursday, May 29, 2008 Val’s 4 –Stanley’s 3

Val’s Variety beat Stanley’s 4-3, behind a solid pitching effort from Brandon Tworig, who pitched 4 innings, allowing just 1 unearned run while striking out 9 to pick up the win. Matt Koperniak came on to pitch the final 2 innings, retiring the side in order in the bottom of the 6th to preserve the win.  There wasn’t a lot of hitting in this game; however Val’s was able to make the most of its 5 hits. Matt Waltermire led off the game with a double, and later scored on an RBI single by Shaun Knapp. The game remained tied at 1 until the 4th inning when Matt Burdick plated Knapp with a 2-out single to give Val’s a 2-1 lead. Val’s scored what proved to be 2 big runs in the 5th as Waltermire led off with a walk and Tworig followed with a single. Both would eventually score, giving Val’s a 3-run cushion. Koperniak also contributed with a single. In the field, Val’s made several good defensive plays, led by Chris Gardner and David Haley.

Val’s seems to bring out the best in Stanley’s. After dropping the opener to Val’s 1-0, the two teams had another well played, exciting game that came down to the last at bat. Stanley’s Jake Hall pitched five innings, striking out 11. Brandon Tworig out dueled Hall by striking out 9 and only allowed two hits. Matt Koperniak finished with two strong innings striking out three for the save. Val’s scored in the first with a Matt Waltermire double and a Shaun Knapp single. Stanley’s matched the scoring in the first as Austin Milesi tied the game. Knapp singled in the fourth and stole second and third and scored on Matt Burdick’s single to take a 2-1 lead.

Val’s extended their lead in the fifth as Waltermire was hit by a pitch, then Tworig singled. Nate Tomkiewicz ground out to score Waltermire. Koperniak singled home Tworig as Val’s took a 4-1 lead. Stanley’s come right back as Evan Lemire singled and Avery Hall was hit by a pitch. Milesi walked and Anthony Duprat hit a sac fly to score Lemire. Jake Hall’s ground out scored brother Avery. Koperniak got out of the inning with a strike out. Mike Lemanski struck out two in sitting down Val’s in the top of the sixth. Koperniak matched the feat in the bottom of the sixth to secure the win for Val’s.

Moderator Carol Francesconi, left, and Anne Marie Furey were presented flowers in memory of the Rev. William Furey, their brother and husband, respectively. The town report was dedicated to him.
CHESHIRE, Mass. — Town meeting on Monday approved all 35 articles on the annual meeting warrant, including a total spending for fiscal 2027 of more than $8.5 million.

Some 77 of the town's more than 2,500 registered voters filled the Cheshire Community House meeting room, debating on a number of articles during the meeting that lasted nearly three hours

The town dedicated its annual report to the Rev. William David Furey, longtime pastor of First Baptist Church and more recently Berkshire Union Chapel in Lanesborough. Furey died last year at age 77.

His wife, Anne Marie Furey, and his sister, Town Moderator Carol Francesconi, were presented with a bouquet of flowers in tribute to him.

He was an exemplary member of the community who left a lasting impression in each and every life that he touched, said Town Clerk Whitney Flynn.

Voters approved several warrant articles that make up an operating budget of $3,840,314 for fiscal 2027. Of this amount, $1,642,481 is allocated for the general government budget, which was approved after clarification of a few questions.

One item was the administrative assistant's salary. Prior to the annual meeting, the town eliminated the executive assistant salary of $54,309 in favor of a part-time administrative assistant salary of $27,155, to reduce costs considering the financial constraint the town is in.
