North Adams jumped on the board in the top of the first inning. John Malloy led off with a single and was sacrificed to second by Greg Van Horn. Kevin Carby came up and singled through the right side to score Malloy for a 1-0 ‘Cats lead.
The Dukes took the lead in the third inning as a two-out error opened the door for three unearned runs to give Pittsfield a 3-1 edge.
That lead would remain until the eighth when the SteepleCats put two on with two outs. Mike Donato grounded a slow roller to short. Jake Rosenbeck’s throw to first was low and got past the fielder, allowing everyone to move up an extra base including Paul Hoilman coming in to score and cutting the lead to 3-2. That was as close as North Adams would get, however, as Zack Anderson came in to get the final out of the eighth and shut the door in the ninth to preserve the victory.
Both starting pitchers were superb as Kyle Vazquez (2-0) picked up the win for Pittsfield went 7.2 innings allowing just the first inning run, walking one and striking out nine. Tim Boyce (3-1) was fantastic again, but suffered his first loss of the season, despite not giving up an earned run in six innings, striking out seven.
North Adams will now play on the road on Thursday at Manchester before coming home for an Independence Day game against the Danbury Westerners. The July 4 game has a special 6:30 start time and will conclude with postgame fireworks. The contest also kicks off a four game homestand for North Adams with games on Saturday, Sunday and Monday at Joe Wolfe Field.
