PITTSFIELD - The Pittsfield Dukes, Sim's Barber Shop, and The Lester Project will sponsor a "Strike Out Cancer night" at Wahconah Park on Sunday, July 27, when the Dukes host the Vermont Mountaineers.

The gates at Wahconah Park will open at four o'clock and the game will begin at five as two of the top teams in the NECBL meet on the final weekend home game for Pittsfield.

There will be a silent auction with items being awarded to the top bidders, as well as Lester Project bracelets, and Sim's barbershop haircuts as well.

The silent auction is set with a multitude of great items that include:

- Two tickets nine rows behind Red Sox on-deck circle for Wednesday Sept 24 vs. Cleveland.

- Dinner for two at Mazzeo's Ristorante

- Five fun day passes at Jiminy Peak Resort

- Weekend stay for two at Eastover Resort for Girls Weekend

- 2008 Team USA autographed ball

- 2007 Team USA autographed bat (including #2 overall pick in Major League Draft Pedro Alvarez)

- 2007 Team USA autographed ball

- One week baseball camp at Dan Duquette Sports Academy from August 10 to 15 ($500.00 value)

- Pittsfield Dukes autographed bat/ball combo

- North Adams SteepleCats autographed bat/ball combo

The Lester Project Bracelets will also be available for sale at the Dukes' game as well. The Lester project was starter in October of 2006, shortly after Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester was diagnosed with Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma. The group has been televised on NESN, CBS, and NECN, and they have raised over sixty thousand dollars for the Jimmy Fund through bracelet sales. Casey Lennon, who has been a Pittsfield Dukes employee for four years, is a co-founder of The Lester Project.

Sim's Barber Shop has also donated their time and services for the event. Sim's will be offering buzz cuts during the game for a suggested minimum donation of $5.00.

All proceeds from the silent auction, The Lester Project bracelets, and Sim's haircuts will be donated to children's cancer research.

Tickets are $8.50 for box seats, $6.00 for GA, and kids 10 and under are free with a paid adult.

The Dukes next game will be at the Danbury Westerners on Tuesday night beginning at seven o'clock. Louie Bernardini (Wheaton College) is the probable starter.

The next Dukes home game is Wednesday night when Pittsfield hosts the Manchester Silkworms in a potential playoff preview beginning at 7 p.m.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

By Brittany PolitoiBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building.

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu.

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building.

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns.

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot.

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
