MCLA Offers New Summer Graduate Courses

NORTH ADAMS – Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) in August will offer several new summer graduate classes for Berkshire County educators who teach mathematics.The graduate mathematics content area courses include “The Psychology of Mathematics Learning,” “Math Concepts and Technology” and “Foundations of Math from Arithmetic to Algebra.”

The Psychology of Mathematics Learning,” taught by Christopher Thomas, Ph.D., will run Aug. 4-8, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the MCLA campus. This course, designed for teachers in K-8, will explore how children learn mathematics. Participants will learn how students develop an understanding of mathematical concepts and skills. They also will create a variety of cognitive strategies for facilitating effective classroom learning and teaching, and study how, why and where learning problems commonly develop.

Math Concepts and Technology,” taught by Rose-Marie Pelletier, M.Ed., will be held online and in face-to-face meetings on the MCLA campus Aug. 11-15, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and one Saturday in October to be announced. This course will provide new ways to look at and understand mathematical concepts that are part of the middle and high school mathematics frameworks. The focus of the course will be to develop a richer understanding of the interconnection of mathematics concepts and methods of communicating this understanding to middle and high school students.

Foundations of Mathematics from Arithmetic to Algebra,” also taught by Thomas on the MCLA campus, will run Aug. 18-22, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. This course is designed for teachers in K-8. Participants will explore mathematical concepts and how these concepts are developed through their teaching. It also will provide effective activities and materials to enhance the learning of algebraic concepts and skills.

New North Adams Restaurant Approved for Liquor License

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A new restaurant on Main Street, a provisions shop and a convenience store all got the nod from the License Commission on Tuesday.
 
Siblings Colleen and Sean Taylor are expanding their cuisine empire yet again with the establishment of Main & Mill in the old TD Bank. They were before the commission to apply for an all-alcohol license. 
 
The building is owned by Ginko on Main Street LLC, which has granted 20 years exclusive possession of the property to Latent Builds as the developer. Jack and Suzy Wadsworth, behind Ginko, are development partners with Salvatore Perry and Karla Rothstein of Latent.
 
The bank closed in early 2021 and purchased by Ginko late that year. Plans for the property unveiled three years ago envisioned a restaurant, retail, a park and rooftop bar. 
 
The building's hosted some pop-up eateries and is currently under construction for the new restaurant. 
 
Colleen Taylor said the restaurant will be open seven days a week serving lunch and dinner, and be open early for coffee. 
 
"It's not going to be a very big restaurant. It's about the same size as Trail House, except for Trail House has a bigger patio, so about the same seating," she said.
