IS183 Art School Classes in Pittsfield this Fall

This Fall IS183 Art School continues to offer art programs for children, teens and adults at the Lichtenstein Center located at 28 Renne Avenue in Pittsfield.

On Saturday, November 1 from 10AM to 12Noon a FREE Print Making Workshop for children and their caregivers will be held on the first floor of the Lichtenstein Center. Faculty artist Ali Herrmann will teach participants how to create original handmade cards using various printmaking techniques. This is a drop in class, no registration is necessary. Children of all ages are invited to attend and must be accompanied by an adult.

An after school drawing class for teens “Urban Landscape in Pittsfield” is being offered by Michael Rousseau on Wednesdays, from October 1st to November 19th from 4PM to 6PM. Using the streets, buildings and landmarks of downtown Pittsfield, students will create dynamic drawings while learning perspective, composition and strengthening their understanding of their surroundings.

Adults meet on Thursday mornings October 16 to November 20 from 9:30 to 12:30 in “Beginning Watercolor in Pittsfield” with instructor June Ferrin. This course is for the first time painter as well as the student who would like to learn more about the various approaches to the medium.


“Printing without a Press” with Ali Herrmann is held on Wednesday mornings 9:30 to 12:30 from October 8 to November 19. This seven week class will explore a variety of printing methods and techniques that can be done without the use of a press. Using brayers, simple cutting tools, water and oil based ink, students will experience a variety of print methods that they can continue on at home.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building. 

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu. 

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building. 

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.  

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns. 

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot. 

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
