Berkshire South Regional Community Center in Great Barrington, in collaboration with CTSB TV, is presenting The Jewish Heritage Project, a unique opportunity for the elders and youth in our communities. It is an oral history storytelling in which the elders have the opportunity to share events, experiences, insights, perspectives, and their personal history. Our own storytellers relay to the next generations their experiences and memories, giving us a glance into a time period that once was.

CTSBTV, our local TV station has offered a most extraordinary opportunity for the community youth to interview and film our elders, continuing the age-old tradition of storytelling. CTSB’s Public Channel 16 is currently airing the five-part series of the Jewish Heritage Project in the towns of Great Barrington, Lee, Lenox, Sheffield and Stockbridge.

PCTV, in the spirit of community, will broaden the scope of viewers by also airing the Jewish Heritage Project on its Public Channel 16, on time Warner Cable in the towns of Pittsfield, Dalton, and Richmond.

Each show will air for one week. The first show is scheduled to start on Thursday, October 16, 2008 at 3 pm and 9 pm; week 2 will begin on Thursday, October 23, at 3 pm and 9 pm; the third show will start on Thursday October 30; the fourth segment will air on Friday, November 6 at 8 am; and the fifth show will air on November 13 at 8 am. Each show is approximately 30 minutes.

The first four shows are hosted by Arielle Sebestyen who will be interviewing Karl Lipsky, Micky Beller, Stanley Marcus and Rebecca Marcus. The final show is hosted by Ilya Yantovsky who will be interviewing Isaac Kutik, his great-grandfather. Ilya also serves as the voiceover for Isaac who speaks Russian.  Jake Elitzer serves as the Announcer for the Jewish Heritage Project.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

By Brittany PolitoiBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building.

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu.

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building.

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns.

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot.

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
