SABIC CEO To Speak At Berkshire Chamber Breakfast

PITTSFIELD — The Berkshire Chamber of Commerce will host a Good News Business Salute on Wednesday, October 22, 2008 sponsored by Berkshire Community College. The breakfast event will be held at the Berkshire Hills Country Club located at 500 Benedict Road in Pittsfield from 7:45 – 9:00 AM. The cost to attend is $20 for Berkshire Chamber members and $28 for non-members and includes a breakfast buffet.

The Chamber will salute five local companies and organizations for their “good news” Berkshire Communicators, Inc, Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health, Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort, Steven Valenti Clothing for Men, and special community recognition for the Junior League of the Berkshires.

Charles (Charlie) Crew, the president and CEO of SABIC Innovative Plastics, a business unit of Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC), will provide the keynote address to an audience of over 300 members of the Berkshire business community. Mr. Crew, who recently assumed his position in May 2008, will speak about SABIC’s presence in the Berkshire community since the acquisition of GE Plastics. Mr. Crew has held a variety of senior management positions with GE Plastics since beginning his career in1977.

John Krol, Media Relations Manager for Berkshire Healthcare Systems (BHCS), will serve as master of ceremonies. In addition to his role with BHS, Mr. Krol serves as the host and producer of “InfoSource,” a television program that highlights health issues in the Berkshires, and “Good Morning Pittsfield,” a daily radio/television show found on WTBR 89.7 FM and simulcast on Pittsfield Community Television Channel 17, where he has interviewed hundreds of guests focusing on a wide variety of issues in the community.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building. 

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu. 

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building. 

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.  

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns. 

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot. 

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
