MIDDLEBURY, VT - The Williams College volleyball team (19-12, 4-3) ended a two match losing streak within the NESCAC Wednesday night with a 3-1 (25-23, 25-23, 19-25, 25-10) over host Middlebury. The match was the first of four NESCAC matches that close out the regular season for the Ephs.

"This was a solid win for us tonight," said head coach Fran Vandermeer. "Our block was very consistent all night and it was one of the keys to victory."

After coming off two wins on the final day of the Hall of Fame Tournament, the Ephs had to battle early as Middlebury fought to the last point in the first two sets, and actually captured the third set. The Ephs, however, were too much for the Panthers as they took the final set in convincing fashion.

The star performer for the Ephs Wednesday night was junior co-captain Chelsea Kubal, who posted 11 kills, 16 digs, 9 assists, and 3 blocks. Splitting time with Kubal at setter was junior Melissa Pun who tallied 30 assists and two aces.

The block success for the Ephs was led by sophomores Eleanor Levine (8 blocks, 8 digs, 6 kills), Kate Anderson (6 blocks, 15 kills), and Nicole Ballon-Landa (4 blocks, 18 kills). Rounding out the numbers for the Ephs were senior Riki McDermott (6 digs), junior Andrea Scioscia (10 digs), and first year Aly McKinnon (10 digs, two aces).

The Ephs now travel to Colby for the final NESCAC weekend of the season. The action starts Friday night at 6 PM with a match against Colby.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

By Brittany PolitoiBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building.

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu.

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building.

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns.

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot.

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
