Chapters Bookstore Hosts Mystery Panel Discussion

PITTSFIELD, Mass - Chapters Bookstore hosts a mystery writer's panel discussion and book signing on Thursday November 20 at 6PM. On hand will be Jim Ciullo, author of Orinoco and A Tango in Tuscany, M.E. Kemp, author of Death of a Bawdy Belle and Death of a Dutch Uncle, and Cindy Davis, author of The Final Masquerade, Circus Bandits, Dessert Bandits, and Shadow Bandits.

Jim Ciullo lives in the Berkshires and travels regularly throughout the country. He has family in Vermont and considers it a second home. In addition to writing, he works as a consultant to human service and education agencies. Jim has worked summer seasons at several cultural venues such as Tanglewood (summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra), the Edith Wharton Restoration (The Mount), and Ventfort Hall (Museum of the Gilded Age). He is a member of Mystery Writers of America.

M. E. Kemp (Marilyn Kemp Rothstein) was born and raised in Oxford Massachusetts where her ancestors settled in 1713. Her nonfiction includes textbooks on local and state governments and articles in many national and regional magazines. Always a history buff, she decided to combine history with mystery in her first novel, Murder, Mather and Mayhem, BookPick of the Week on Northeast Public Radio. Her short story, “Murder in the Marsh”, won first prize in the New England Writer’s Network mystery contest (2006). Other short stories and essays have won awards. Kemp lives in Upstate New York.

Cindy Davis is originally from the Cape Cod area of Massachusetts. She is the author of several mystery novels, both for adults and young adults, as well as numerous short stories and articles. She has also edited two magazines, and the novels of countless authors. Cindy currently resides with her family in New Hampshire..

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building. 

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu. 

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building. 

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.  

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns. 

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot. 

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
