The South County Center of Berkshire Community College is offering the following workshops this spring.

“Writer’s Workout” (WKS-937) offers an intense regimen for both experienced and emerging writers. A highly effective method of working is introduced with weekly exercises to help get writing ideas down on paper. Participants receive critiques, and are urged to the next challenge focusing on technical and craft aspects of fiction, such as dialogue, character development, and narrative structure. Students explore possible genres and voices that may be the key to opening up the writing and release/unleash of their writing selves. Classes meet Thursday evening, Feb. 5 through April 23, from 6:30 to 9. Cost is $180.

“Introduction to Wine” (WKS-403) gives students a little history of winemaking, and teaches to identify wine’s aromas and flavors. Participants experience that buying wine can be as much fun as drinking it. The one-session class meets Thursday evening, Jan. 22, from 6 to 8 at Grape Finds. Participants must be 21 years or older. A photo ID is required. Cost is $20.

“Simply Red!” (WKS-481) explores the gamut from light and juicy to bold and ostentatious reds. Learn why, when it comes to red wines, bad soil makes good wine. The one-session class meets Thursday evening, Feb. 19, from 6 to 8 at Grape Finds. Participants must be 21 years or older. A photo ID is required. Cost is $20.

“ServSafe Food Safety Certification” (WKS-396) a nationally-recognized course, meets specifications set by the Massachusetts Food Code, and certifies students in food safety and sanitation. The class includes course book, instruction, certification exam, and diploma. Classes meet Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 24 through March 3, from 1 to 4:30.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

By Brittany PolitoiBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building.

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu.

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building.

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns.

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot.

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
