Downing Announces State Funds For Mount Greylock Capital Project

BOSTON, Mass. - State Senator Benjamin B. Downing (D-Pittsfield) announced today that the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is awarding $3,940 in matching funds for the rehabilitation and upgrade of the Wilbur Clearing, an Appalachian Trail back country overnight site located on the Mount Greylock State Reservation.

“The highest point in Massachusetts, Mount Greylock offers stunning views and challenging terrain to hikers and nature enthusiasts alike,” said Downing.  “We are lucky to have such natural beauty in our own back yard. DCR’s Partnerships Matching Funds Program helps to preserve our natural environment for generations to come.”

DCR announced a total of $755,226 in matching funds for improvement and enhancement projects in state parks and other facilities across the Commonwealth. The money, allocated through DCR’s Partnerships Matching Funds Program, will support 21 new projects. An additional $800,000 will be reallocated to 15 existing projects that were not able to be completed last year. This program is funded through DCR’s five-year capital budget.

The Partnerships Matching Funds Program accepts applications from Friends groups and other park advocacy groups, civic and community organizations, institutions, businesses, and individuals with an interest in improving the Commonwealth’s natural, cultural, and recreational resources. DCR considers applications that will provide a match of non-state funds for capital projects in state parks. DCR assigns a project manager to each approved project; the manager will oversee implementation of the project in close consultation with the partners making the contributions.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

By Brittany PolitoiBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building.

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu.

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building.

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns.

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot.

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
