BCC to Offer New Workshops

Berkshire Community College will offer the following new workshops this spring. Unless otherwise noted, workshops meet on BCC’s main campus on West Street.

“Ceramics” (WKS 329) explores the techniques of throwing, trimming and glazing while students produce six to eight small thrown pieces. Classes, taught by James Horsford, meet Monday evening, March 9 through April 13, from 3:30 to 5:30; or Tuesday evening, March 10 through April 14, from 6:30 to 8:30 at the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts. Cost for registration is $175.

“Yoga for All Levels” (WKS 610) for beginners or novices, helps increase flexibility, condition muscles and clear minds. Participants with a limited condition or recovering from surgery will benefit from this workshop. Classes, taught by Paula Beaudin, meet Monday evening, March 30 through May 11, from 5:30 to 6:30. Cost for registration is $65.

“Pastry in 3 Easy Lessons!” (WKS 2051) masters three kinds of pastry to create dozens of desserts, hors d’ourvres, and appetizers. Students can bring containers to carry home their creations. Classes, taught by Audrey Sussman, meet Monday, March 30 through April 13, from 10 to 2. Cost for registration is $120.

“Toolkit for New Supervisors” (WKS 9717) puts the job of the supervisor into context for those relatively new to the position of untrained in the role. Areas covered include maintaining appropriate boundaries, motivation, and employee coaching. Participants create an individual action plan for addressing a particular issue or relationship when they return to the workplace. The one-session class, taught by Diana Brooks, meets Tuesday morning, March 31, from 8:30 to 12 at the Intermodal Education Center on the corner of Columbus Avenue and North Street.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building. 

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu. 

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building. 

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.  

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns. 

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot. 

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
