Alzheimer’s Care Partners Education Series

BERKSHIRE COUNTY - Elder Services of Berkshire County and Alzheimer’s Association, MA chapter are partnering to host an upcoming education series. This free program is designed for the family and friends involved in the care of someone with any form of dementia, suspected or newly diagnosed.

The series consist of six classes and will give participants an opportunity to learn about the disease and the resources available to them. They will gain knowledge and tools to assist them in coping with their care giving role. Care partners will be able to give better care thus allowing the person to remain in the home longer.

Care partners are invited to attend any or all of the classes.

Topics in this educational series are:

o What is dementia?   -- April 16
o Best ways to interact with the person  -- April 23
o How to care for the person at home  -- April 30
o Planning for the future  -- May 14

o Asking for help  -- May 21
o Taking care of yourself. – May 28

Studies have shown that three out of ten caregivers will die before the person they are taking care of. These classes are designed to empower the caregiver and lessen the stress.

Participants are invited to attend any or all classes. Participants will receive a special care package.

These free classes will meet once a week on Thursdays: April 16, April 23, April 30, May 14, May 21, and May 28. Class time is from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Elder Services of Berkshire County, 66 Wendell Ave., Pittsfield, MA  01201. To register call 499-0524.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building. 

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu. 

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building. 

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.  

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns. 

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot. 

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
