WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Despite a patchy second half, Williams (3-2, 3-0 NESCAC) put together a solid first period, securing their 4-3 win against Colby (3-2, 1-2 NESCAC). Undefeated in conference, the Ephs' victory against Colby was due to a strong team effort and crucial performances by several individuals on both ends of the field.

From the outset of the first period, the Ephs' played with unmatched intensity. 11:48 into the game Williams gained the lead for good when sophomore Lucy Rollins (Rye, NY) scored the game winning goal off an assist by junior Alice Bearn (Bethlehem, PA).  Eight minutes later, senior captains Whit Thayer (Lancaster, PA) and Anne de Saint Phalle (Bronxville, NY) tag-teamed off one of six penalty corners improving the score to 2-0 in the Ephs' favor. Colby remained scoreless going into the second period with one penalty corner for the half. Williams had 12 shots to Colby’s 8.

The second period saw a more scrappy performance by the Mules sparked by a goal only 25 seconds into the half by Colby junior Heather Quadir off a pass by first-year Lucy Gerrity.  Williams answered with another goal 40:43 minutes into the game when junior Lindsey Davies (Greenwich, CT) hit net off an assist by sophomore Ariel Lyddane (Greenwich, CT) returning the Ephs' to a 2 point lead over the Mules. Davies found the net again only five minutes later off a second assist by Bearne.

Near the end of the second, fatigue kicked in as Williams lost a little of their composure allowing the Mules to slide in and slash the margin to two on Quadir’s second goal of the game unassisted. With only two seconds remaining, the Mules made the most of a penalty corner earning their third and final goal as the clock expired by first-year Courtney Erskine. Despite some moments of weakness for the Ephs' in the second, they still came out on top finishing the game 4-3 with 8 shots to Colby’s 20 and 3 penalty corners to the Mules 11.

Lindsey Davies put forth her best performance of the season using her speed and finishing in front of the net. On the defensive side, sophomore Karyn Moss (Medfield) and senior captain Amy Siedlecki (Madison, CT) had key roles in holding off the feisty Mules throughout competition with the latter gaining a defensive save for the Ephs' in the first period.

Junior goalie Katrina Tulla (New Canaan, CT) played well for the Ephs' against an aggressive offense tallying 12 saves over the course of 70 minutes. Mule goalie Liz Fountaine also played the full 70 minutes in the net finishing with 10 saves.

“This was a good conference win for us,” Commented Coach Alix Burrale, “I look forward to seeing our continuing progression if we improve on the things we lacked in the second half.”

The Ephs' play again Wednesday night at 7PM at Springfield.

Williamstown Board Opts to Negotiate with College on Water St. Lot

By Stephen DravisiBerkshires Staff

Newly elected board member Nate Budington, far left, participates in his first in-person meeting along with, from left, Matt Neely, Stephanie Boyd, Peter Beck, Shana Dixon and Town Manager Robert Menicocci.
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Select Board on Monday decided to enter into negotiations with Williams College on the sale of the vacant town-owned lot at 59 Water St.

But the board members made it clear that the college's proposal to acquire the lot is a starting point, not a final deal that the elected officials would accept.

"For the sake of continued conversation, I'm in favor of [awarding Williams the site], but if this process wasn't continued with the opportunity for further negotiation, I wouldn't vote to continue this," Peter Beck said. "I think that next step is necessary for us to get to a yes on this."

"I think there's wide agreement on that," Matthew Neely said just before the 5-0 vote to enter talks with the college.

Williams was the sole respondent to a town-issued request for proposals to develop the former town garage site, currently a dirt lot.

The college's stated intent is to build a new Facilities office and create up to 170 parking spaces at 59 Water Street. That use will allow the college to redevelop the current Facilities building site and parking lot as part of a reconception of the school's indoor athletic and recreation facilities.

Under the terms of the RFP, the college's proposal was subjected to review by an ad hoc advisory committee to the town manager, who brought the question to the Select Board. That board will have the final say on any purchase and sales agreement.
