WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Williams College field hockey team was behind 3-0 to national powerhouse Bowdoin College 68:52 into their Sunday game but co-captain Meera Sivalingam managed to pull off a last minute shot to bring the score up to 3-1.

Bowdoin, who have won the NCAA championships three times in the last four years, kept the ball consistently on the Eph's side for the first half of the match.  The Polar Bears managed six shots to Williams' one in first thirty-five minutes. Bowdoin's Cathleen Smith, assisted by Elizabeth Clegg, scored at 1:50, followed by unassisted scores by her teammates Katie Herter and McKenna Teague at 13:38 and 27:20, respectively.

Williams did not have a shot on goal until twenty-five minutes in, when senior Katie Ellis made a bid for the net. In the second half, first-year standout Caitlin Conlon had four shots on goal. Fellow first-year Katie Jolin had one shot on goal, as did senior co-captain Margie Fulton - bringing Williams' total shots up to eight to Bowdoin's nine.

The Ephs stepped up their play considerably in the second half, however, garnering their first penalty corner on the Polar Bears in three years.

It was on the last of the three penalty corners earned by Williams that Sivalingam, assisted by sophomore Emily Jablonski and first-year Cary Hairfield, was able to make her successful bid on goal. Bowdoin ended the game with a total of eight penalty corners to Williams' three.

Conlon was injured 61:17 into the game.

Williams' goalkeeper Ariana Spiliotes recorded four saves and allowed three goals, while Bowdoin's Kayla Lessard recorded three saves and allowed one goal. Each spent the full seventy minutes in the net.

The Ephs will go on the road Wednesday to play Springfield College at 7 p.m.

Williamstown Board Opts to Negotiate with College on Water St. Lot

By Stephen DravisiBerkshires Staff

Newly elected board member Nate Budington, far left, participates in his first in-person meeting along with, from left, Matt Neely, Stephanie Boyd, Peter Beck, Shana Dixon and Town Manager Robert Menicocci.
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Select Board on Monday decided to enter into negotiations with Williams College on the sale of the vacant town-owned lot at 59 Water St.

But the board members made it clear that the college's proposal to acquire the lot is a starting point, not a final deal that the elected officials would accept.

"For the sake of continued conversation, I'm in favor of [awarding Williams the site], but if this process wasn't continued with the opportunity for further negotiation, I wouldn't vote to continue this," Peter Beck said. "I think that next step is necessary for us to get to a yes on this."

"I think there's wide agreement on that," Matthew Neely said just before the 5-0 vote to enter talks with the college.

Williams was the sole respondent to a town-issued request for proposals to develop the former town garage site, currently a dirt lot.

The college's stated intent is to build a new Facilities office and create up to 170 parking spaces at 59 Water Street. That use will allow the college to redevelop the current Facilities building site and parking lot as part of a reconception of the school's indoor athletic and recreation facilities.

Under the terms of the RFP, the college's proposal was subjected to review by an ad hoc advisory committee to the town manager, who brought the question to the Select Board. That board will have the final say on any purchase and sales agreement.
