Caporizzo doesn't expect school closures, but we'll double check in the morning. Right now, at 10:23 p.m., it's pouring outside.
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Get out the shovels. The late summer hiatus is coming to a close as a major snowstorm makes its way into the Berkshires tonight.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning from 6 tonight until 6 a.m. Thursday. From 5 to 10 inches is expected to fall across the Southern Berkshires, with up to a foot in North Berkshire and Southern Vermont.
Worse, the rain will continue off and on again today before changing to snow. Beware of black ice conditions. Temperatures will be upper 30s by later today, dropping into the 20s overnight. Most cities and towns have already instituted winter parking bans so don't leave your car on the street.
Check back for cancelations; if you have a cancelation, email us at info@iberkshires.com or post to our Twitter (@iberkshires) or our Facebook page.
As the second major storm of the season approaches, the state's Emergency Management Agency Director Kurt Schwartz reminds residents, "Before snow, ice and severe winter weather hit the region, it is important that you take the proper steps to ensure the safety of your family and home."
Have an emergency kit handy, make sure phones and other electronics are charged, keep a flashlight handy, make sure you've got sufficient heating fuel, keep your chimney or heating equipment cleaned and properly maintained, and make sure carbon monoxide and smoke detectors are working. Understand the winter terminology used by weather forecasters:
1. Winter Storm Watch – Be alert, a storm is likely.
2. Winter Storm Warning – Take action, the storm is in or entering the area.
3. Blizzard Warning – Snow and strong winds combined will produce blinding snow, near zero visibility, deep drifts, and life-threatening wind chill. Seek refuge immediately.
4. Winter Weather Advisory – Winter weather conditions are expected to cause significant inconveniences and may be hazardous, especially to motorists.
5. Frost/Freeze Warning – Below freezing temperatures are expected and may cause damage to plants, crops or fruit trees.
