IS183 Gala Goes Buckaroo Bollywood For Benefit

Print Story | Email Story
STOCKBRIDGE, Mass. — The Interlaken Estate (formerly the Desisto School) on Route 183 will be transformed into a Texan Taj Mahal for IS183 Art School of the Berkshires' annual gala the Buckaroo Bollywood Ball on Saturday, March 31.

This auction, dinner and dance party benefit is designed to inspire guests to participate in a mash-up of John Wayne westerns and Bollywood extravaganzas.

The ball begins at 6 p.m. with a feast curated by Brian Alberg, head honcho of the kitchen at The Red Lion Inn, and caterer Kate Baldwin.

Guests can bid on silent auction items, including artwork, fine-dining opportunities, hotel escapes, handmade home furnishings, rejuvenating bodywork, and exclusive experiences. The evening will also feature a live auction with works by Gregory Crewdson. All funds raised by the live auction will help bring IS183's Learning Through Arts program to more public schools in Berkshire County.

Patrons and partygoers will blend culture and couture with swing skirts and saris, dhotis and dungarees, chaps and cholis, bangles and bandanas, bindis and bandoliers, and sandals and spurs. Those needing fashion inspiration can visit www.BuckarooBollywood.com for costume ideas.

Partygoers can join in the fun at three levels. At the $300 level, Rootin’ Tootin’ Guru patrons will be recognized at the event, online and in print, and will receive a gift certificate for an IS183 class plus invitation to a post-gala thank-you cocktail party, along with a ticket to the dinner and dance party. At $150 per person, Buckin’ Brahmin dinner guests can chow down at the banquet then kick up their heels at the dance party. Pistol-Packin’ Pandits arrive at 9 p.m. when the dance party kicks in; their $50 ticket lets them belly up to the saloon for beer and wine, and enjoy desserts donated by Chocolate Springs.

Seating at the dinner is limited; the deadline for purchasing Rootin’ Tootin’ Guru and Buckin’ Brahmin tickets is March 16. Tickets at all levels can be purchased at www.is183.org or call 413-298-5252, Ext. 100.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

By Brittany PolitoiBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building.

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu.

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building.

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns.

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot.

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
