NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts Trailblazers won Monday afternoon against cross-town rival Williams College before dropping the nightcap.

Rachel Quackenbush and the Trailblazers (19-20) defense kept Williams (16-21) scoreless in the first game, winning 3-0. Quackenbush gave up five hits and struck out five.

The Trailblazers got on the board quick in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs Amanda Meczywor walked and scored on Angelica Perfido's double. Sam Barbarotta then singled and Perfido scored.

MCLA scored the final run of the game in the bottom of the second on a Quackenbush sacrifice fly to right.

Meczywor, Barbarotta, Perfido, Boyer and Quackenbush all recorded hits for the Trailblazers.

The nightcap didn't go so well, with the Trailblazers losing 9-1 in six innings.

Pitcher Ainsley MacDonald kept the Ephs off base until the third inning. An infield error put Merrilee Weston on first and a base hit by pitcher Emalie Rott put runners on first and second with no outs. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners up. Theresa Legan then hit an RBI single and that was the first of four runs they went on to score in the inning.

Williams went on to score in the fourth, fifth and sixth inning on seven hits. Rott helped herself at the plate going 3-for-3 and scoring all three times she reached base.

MacDonald was tagged with the loss while Rott earned the win.

The Trailblazers will be off until Friday when they host the winner of Worcester and Framingham in the second round of MASCAC. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.

In other news, Quackenbush was tabbed the MASCAC Softball pitcher of the week for the third time in four weeks following an impressive 5-0 week. Quackenbush helped lead MCLA to a 6-0 mark in league play for the week. She tossed 33 innings while posting a 0.42 ERA.

Williamstown Board Opts to Negotiate with College on Water St. Lot

Newly elected board member Nate Budington, far left, participates in his first in-person meeting along with, from left, Matt Neely, Stephanie Boyd, Peter Beck, Shana Dixon and Town Manager Robert Menicocci.
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Select Board on Monday decided to enter into negotiations with Williams College on the sale of the vacant town-owned lot at 59 Water St.

But the board members made it clear that the college's proposal to acquire the lot is a starting point, not a final deal that the elected officials would accept.

"For the sake of continued conversation, I'm in favor of [awarding Williams the site], but if this process wasn't continued with the opportunity for further negotiation, I wouldn't vote to continue this," Peter Beck said. "I think that next step is necessary for us to get to a yes on this."

"I think there's wide agreement on that," Matthew Neely said just before the 5-0 vote to enter talks with the college.

Williams was the sole respondent to a town-issued request for proposals to develop the former town garage site, currently a dirt lot.

The college's stated intent is to build a new Facilities office and create up to 170 parking spaces at 59 Water Street. That use will allow the college to redevelop the current Facilities building site and parking lot as part of a reconception of the school's indoor athletic and recreation facilities.

Under the terms of the RFP, the college's proposal was subjected to review by an ad hoc advisory committee to the town manager, who brought the question to the Select Board. That board will have the final say on any purchase and sales agreement.
