CHESHIRE, Mass. — Hoosac Valley High School administrators acknowledged the entire sophomore class Friday for achieving perfect attendance during their recent MCAS test.
Some 67 students were recognized Friday morning with a special breakfast for perfect attendance during the three days — Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday — of English language arts testing for the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System.
"We had balloons and signs congratulating them at the school entrance this morning and had a section of the cafeteria decorated as well," Hoosac Valley High School Principal Jerimiah Ames said. "The cafeteria prepared a special breakfast for them and we had popcorn for them as well."
Ames added that every student was given a raffle ticket and some Hoosac Valley merchandise was raffled off as well as a "get out of detention" coupon.
The principal said this is the first time the school has done this, and it is part of an effort to make clear to students the importance of the test not only for their future but for the school.
"Several of our coaches and teacher were there along with guidance counselors and school administration," Ames said. "We talked to the group about how impressed we were by what they had achieved as a class and thanked them for all their hard work throughout the week."
He said this is also the first time an entire class had perfect attendance during the test.
"It's not common to have all the members of any grade level present," he said. "To have them all there on a testing day is pretty rare. To have the whole class present for three straight days of testing says something special about the class."
Ames said he hopes the class can keep this momentum going into the math portion of the test, which is right around the corner.
"To me, it says that these kids value their education and recognize the value of what our school has to offer," he said. "I think their accomplishment this week is also reflective of what we’re capable of as a school and a community."
