CHESHIRE, Mass. – The Adams-Cheshire Regional School Committee will get four candidates to interview for superintendent of schools.
The Superintendent Search Committee made the decision on Thursday night, voting 5-3 to send the majority of the applicants to the full School Committee.
"I am OK with that they did to make the cut and they deserve the interview," Chairman Stephen Vigna said.
Thirteen people applied for the job; the search committee decided to interview six. Of those six, only five were interviewed, after one candidate dropped out. The committee then voted to eliminate one applicant who they felt was not qualified, leaving the final tally at four.
Although there was some hesitancy on the committee to move forward two of the applicants for reasons not mentioned in open session, the majority of members felt that because they scored in the higher percentile of the scoring system they should all move forward.
Initially the committee planned to only send two candidates forward, however, School Committee members said Monday night that they wanted a minimum of three candidates.
"They wanted a minimum of three that was clear Monday night, and this satisfies that," search panel member Adam Emerson said.
The names of the candidates were not revealed at this time. They will be once they are fowarded to the School Committee.
How far these finalists will actually go is still in flux because the school district is flirting with the idea of entering into an agreement with the North Adams Public Schools to share a superintendent.
There is a meeting scheduled Monday between the two school committees to hash out some of the concerns in this potential agreement. Adams-Cheshire, however, can't take too much time. It needs to get a superintendent in place as current Superintendent Robert Putnam is retiring at the end of the school year.
Vigna said he does not believe that anything that comes out of Monday’s meeting will end the search process because there is still too much in the air.
"I won't let that happen and I will do everything I can not to let that happen and whatever happens Monday night there is still a lot to work out," he said.
