SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Bobby Casey score 24 points, and the Williams College men's basketball team held off a second-half comeback bid by Springfield College to take a 75-71 win on Saturday.

 

Springfield (2-5) trailed by 13 at half-time, but after shooting 30 percent from the field in the first half, the Pride shot 50 percent after the break.

 

Williams, meanwhile, earned a 37-32 rebounding edge in the game behind 13 caroms from Kyle Scadlock, who also scored 12 points.

 

Springfield got 24 points apiece from Jake Ross and Heath Post. Taconic graduate Deonte Sandifer passed out four assists and had a pair of steals for Springfield.

 

Second-ranked Williams (9-0) is off until Dec. 30, when it takes on Montclair State at Moravian College.

 

Women's Basketball

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Emily Chang scored 20 points, and Lauren Vostal had 13 rebounds to lead Williams to a 67-49 win over Wesleyan.

 

The Ephs (5-4) go to Santa Cruz, Calif., on Dec. 20 to face Whitman.

 

Women's Hockey

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Annie Rush scored with less than two minutes to play to break a 2-2 tie and send Williams on to a 4-2 win over Elmira (6-2-1).

 

Williams took a 2-0 second-period lead on goals by Amanda Reisman and Meghan Halloran, but Elmira responded with a pair of goals from Katie Granato.

 

Rush's game-winner was followed by an empty-net goal by Halloran.

 

Williams (5-2-1) hosts Manhattanville on Sunday.

 

Women's Swimming and Diving

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Williams swim and dive team hit the road today to face Wesleyan University, Tufts University, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute at Wesleyan.

 

The Ephs competed for the last time in 2018, and competed against fellow NESCAC teams for the first time this season. Although they competed in a quad meet, the meet was scored as three separate dual meets, the final results against WPI were 242-73, against Wesleyan were 239-73, and against Tufts were 214.50-104.50.  

 

Molly Craig had a great meet, winning all three of her individual events and helping the 400 free relay to its victory. She started the meet by swimming the 500 freestyle, part of the squad of Ephwomen who placed 1-7, although only the top three scored (5 minutes, 03.27 seconds). Placing second was Casey DeLano (5:12.06), and third was Gwyneth Maloy '21 (5:13.49). Craig's second swim was the 400 IM, which she swam for the first time this season, and won in a time of 4:33.19.

 

Freshman Abby Matheny came in second, with the fastest backstroke split in the field, (4:36.31). Craig's final individual swim was the 200 fly, winning in a time of 2:07.58, with Veronica Wolff placing fourth in her first 200 fly of the season (2:09.75).

 

In the shorter freestyle events, Laura Westphal placed first in the 50, 100, and 200 freestyles. In the 50 free, she won in a time of 24.19, senior Dana Chung placing third with a time of 24.91. in the 100 freestyle, Westphal placed first (52.81), with Chung taking third (54.40), and Georgia Panitz '22 taking third with a time of 54.52. Finally, in the 200 free, Westphal won with an in season best time of 1:52.71, with Casey DeLano placing second with a time of 1:57.14.

 

Divers need two scores over a specific point total to qualify for Regionals, and Eph diver Gabby Mercier made her first score tonight. She placed first in both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards, qualifying for Regionals through the 1-meter, and winning both boards by over 50 points.

 

Men's Swimming and Diving

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. —- In their final racing opportunity prior to the holiday break, the Eph competed in an energetic four-way meet, facing off against 2018 NESCAC Champion Tufts, Wesleyan, and WPI.

 

The Williams men defeated Tufts (170.5-121.5) and Wesleyan (214.5-104.5), but fell just one point short against WPI, which ended in a score of 151-150.

 

Despite the loss, the Ephs brought some fast swims to the table, with a number of people dropping down their season bests. The meet kicked off with the 50s of stroke. In the 50 Breaststroke, Williams took places 2-4 with Jack Melnick  (26.68), Sam Gollob (27.03), and Clayton Morikawa  (27.20). Later, in the 100, the same crew returned to touch 2nd through 5th, as Melnick (58.42), Morikawa (58.73), and Gollob (59.44) all touched in season best times and were joined by first year Aaron Stanton (59.24). In the longest of the breaststroke races, Morikawa and Melnick had season-best swims, with Morikawa touching second in 2:10.18, and Melnick fourth in 2:11.32.

 

The 50 fly brought a young group forward, where Brennan Lee  (23.29), Zeb Hart (23.42), and John Gaffney (23.89) combined to take places 3-5. Hart returned later in the meet for the 100 fly and demolished his season best to touch third in 51.68. Lucca Delcompare followed Hart closely in the 100, but made his presence known in the 200, bringing his intense closing speed to the table, but falling just short of the win, settling for second in a time of 1:54.08.

 

In the 500 freestyle, the ever-improving Williams distance crew asserted themselves over the rest of the field in a 1-2 sweep, with Jamie Lovette touching first in 4:41.62 and Jackson Karofsky touching second in 4:43.05. Impressively, in a quick turnaround, Karofky won the 400 IM shortly after in a season best 4:07.82, where he was followed by Gaffney, who placed second. Lovette had a quick turnaround of his own, racing Tufts NCAA-runner up sprinter Roger Gu. In an extremely close race, Gu ultimately touched out Lovette 1:42.89 to 1:42.94, despite Lovette's valiant closing 50. Henry Marquardt improved his season best to touch for third in 1:45.99.

 

The backstrokes brought a freshman crew to the forefront, as Nick Whitcomb and Paul Leclerc traded close races. In the 50 backstroke, Whitcomb flew to the wall for third in 24.17, while Leclerc came in fifth at 24.54. The 100 was even closer, with Leclerc (52.62) out-touching Whitcomb (52.72). In the longest of the distances, Leclerc took the win overall, touching in 1:55.29, while Whitcomb settled for fourth in a season-best 1:56.13. Splitting them up was Karofsky, returning for his third individual event, hitting the wall in 1:55.73 to tie for second.
