State grant awarded to Renfrew Field Project in Adams

The Town of Adams has been awarded an Executive Office of Environmental Affairs Urban Self-Help Grant for Renfrew Field. According to state Sen. Andrea F. Nuciforo, Jr. the town will receive $250,000 for the acquisition of 1.3 acres and for park renovations.

“Renfrew Field’s location, near the Ashuwillticook Trail and on the local bus line, makes it accessible to many area residents who may not otherwise have the opportunity to use the facility,” said Nuciforo (D-Pittsfield).

The proposal to transform Renfrew Park from a local ball field to a regional multi-use recreational hub will benefit several communities along the Route 8 corridor.

“In its ongoing efforts to revitalize downtown, Adams’ officials have identified Renfrew Field as an excellent opportunity to create a regional recreational park,” Nuciforo wrote in support of the grant application to Joel Lerner, EOEA Director of Conservation Services. “In doing so, the town hopes to integrate economic development, tourism, and outdoor recreation into a sensible plan that benefits and appeals to a range of constituencies.”

In August, the Select Board unanimously voted to forward the application to the Commonwealth. As part of the grant, a local match of about $105,000 is required, which town officials hope to secure at a special town meeting on Nov. 18.

“This grant is the result of countless volunteers. We’re thrilled it was selected, and look forward to continue working with the Adams Parks Commission,” said Donna E. Cesan, Adams Dept. of Community Development director.

The funding awarded to Adams is part of $8.7 million in projects funded by EOEA for the Self-Help and Urban Self-Help programs. The programs are designed to assist municipal conservation commissions acquire land for natural resource protection and passive outdoor recreational purposes.

“These two programs represent how state government can help communities set aside vital resources for future generations to enjoy,” said Bob Durand, Secretary of Environmental Affairs.
