Hoosac edges Wahconah for Third Straight Win

CHESHIRE, Mass. — After defeating its second North Division team in less than two weeks, the Hoosac Valley girls' soccer team appears to be officially on a roll. Freshman Madison Ryan's goal in the eighth minute of play gave the Hurricanes a 1-0 home win over Wahconah on Tuesday, helping Hoosac to its third straight victory in the process.

Hurricanes' head coach Blair Mahar said Ryan's early goal and a key save by sophomore goalie Megan Richardson late in the game were the two big plays in a game in which Hoosac (6-2) held a 12-6 edge in shots.

"Meg had a diving save with five minutes to play that prevented the tie and gave strength to the girls when they most needed it," Mahar said. "Both teams played beautiful possession soccer. Wahconah controlled the pace at times, and we controlled the game at times. Madi's goal and Meg's are what tipped the balance."

Ryan scored the game-winner with some steady play inside the Warriors' 18-yard box. After a scramble for possession, junior Megan Rodowicz poked the ball out to Ryan, who collected it and beat Wahconah keeper Payton Hines (eight saves) with a patient shot. Richardson did the rest from there, making six saves throughout the game to earn her third shutout of the season.

While Ryan and Richardson stood out in the box score, Mahar said there were several players who've played key roles in the Hurricanes' recent three-game win streak.

"Our captains, Danielle Beauchemin, Megan Rodowicz and Courtney Hayer, continue to lead by example with 100 percent dedication on the pitch," Mahar said. The freshman continue to make huge efforts in these wins as well. Abby Chaput had an outstanding game on defense, shutting down Wahconah's strikers. Madi and Jasmine Knapp were both strong in the middle, supporting Danielle and Megan and making brilliant runs with them on the attack."

Hoosac has two more home games this week, one against St. Joe's at 4 p.m. on Friday and another one versus Frontier at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.
