Big Hits Lead Hornets Over Beavers

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — After scoring one run in its last two games combined, the McCann Tech baseball team broke out in a big way on Friday, taking advantage of seven hits and six walks to earn a 10-6 home win over Putnam.

The Hornets (4-6) scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning before senior Mike Chappell came up with a big three-run double to spark a four-run second frame. Chappell would later score on an error, giving McCann starter TJ Therrien a cushy 6-1 lead after two innings. Therrien lasted into the fourth, allowing three runs and five walks to pick up his first win of the season. Therrien struck out four batters before turning the ball over to freshman Sean Davis (three strikeouts, four walks), who gave up three runs over the final 3 2/3 innings to earn the save.

Gabriel Roman went the distance for the Beavers, striking out three and walking six to take the loss.

"It was a great performance today by our team," Hornets head coach Pat Ryan said. "TJ came out strong, throwing strikes and allowing our solid defense to make plays for outs. Sean stepped on the hill in the third to take over where TJ left off and finished strong. Our offensive and defensive game has been improving game after game with less errors and being more patient at the plate. The team is clicking together nicely."

Sophomore Dillon Carr also swung a nice bat for McCann, ripping a pair of triples that led to him scoring a run. Therrien and senior Nate Gutmann each finished with a double for the Hornets, who next host St. Mary's at 4 p.m. on Monday.
