Pittsfield's Late Rally Hands Greylock First Loss

PITTSFIELD -- The Mount Greylock baseball team fought and clawed their way back into its game against Pittsfield on Thursday, erasing a three-run deficit in the final two innings of the game. Unfortunately for the Mounties, however, the Generals had the last at bats and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out a 4-3 win at home.

Pittsfield (2-1) struck for two runs in the fourth inning and one more in the fifth to open up a 3-0 lead on Greylock starter Tommy Nowlan. Steve Messina's team came back strong, however, scoring two runs in the top of the sixth inning and then tying the game in the top of the seventh. Despite being outhit 11-6 in the game, Pittsfield pushed across the winning run in the seventh frame, spoiling a solid start by Nowlan. The senior captain took his first loss of the year, pitching all seven innings with four strikeouts and four walks.

"This was a tough game," Messina said. "Tommy pitched very well and we were able to come back and tie it in the seventh. We outhit them, but a few miscues hurt us. I have a young team with a lot of heart. They never gave up, so I'm very proud of the effort from everyone today."

Nowlan and sophomore Andrew Leitch each had three hits on the day, and Messina said they are "both looking very good at the plate." Nowlan and fellow seniors Kevin Agostini and Kyle Brynes each drove in a run to pace the Mounties' offense.

Greylock next travels north to Vermont for a game against Rutland at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
