Greylock Loses Slugfest to St. Joe's

WILLIAMSTOWN -- The offense of the Mount Greylock softball team certainly showed up early in the 2011 season. Now, the Mounties just need to clean up the other parts of their game and they'll be well on their way to a successful spring.

June Blake's squad put up an impressive 10 runs on 14 hits in their season opener against St. Joe's, but the Crusaders took advantage of four Greylock errors and a five-run fifth inning to earn a 14-10 win on the road on Wednesday. St. Joe's had 14 hits of their own and led 6-5 before breaking the game open in the fifth.

"We looked very strong offensively racking up 10 runs on 14 hits," Blake said. "Defensively we have some things to work on, but it was an overall a good effort for the first time on our field."

Mounties sophomore Alexis Bushika was the tough-luck loser in the first game of the year. She went the distance, striking out five batters and walking three on the day. She was charged with 14 runs, although not a single one of the runs was earned.

Bushika also had a solid day at the plate, collecting three hits and scoring a pair of runs. She was just one of four Greylock batters with four hits. Freshman Markell Shea led the way with three hits and four RBI, while junior captains Michaela Dinicola and Catie Benoit also gathered three hits in their first game of the year.

The Mounties next host Lee at 4:15 p.m. on Friday.
