Mounties Struggle Against Spartans' Shepard

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The Mount Greylock softball team just couldn't find their way against Lilah Shepard and Monument Mountain on Wednesday. The Spartans' starter held the Mounties to just three hits over seven innings of work in a 3-1 road win for Monument.

Shepard did allow five walks in the game, including a free pass to eighth-grader Miranda Voller with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth inning. That tied the game at 1-1, but the Spartans came back with two unearned runs, one in the top of the sixth and another one in the seventh, to pull out the win.

"We just couldn't seem to get things rolling offensively," Greylock head coach June Blake said. "We had bases loaded with no outs in the sixth and failed to score. On top of that, we didn't play our best game defensively, committing five errors and giving up three runs, which were all unearned. Monument played a solid game, making the most of their opportunities."

Sophomore Alexis Bushika suffered the brunt of the Mounties' five errors, taking the loss despite only allowing four hits and zero earned runs in a complete-game effort. She struck out seven and walked two as Greylock's season record fell to 4-8.

Freshman Heather Tomkowicz went 2 for 2 to lead the Mounties' offense, while junior Alyssa Mangiardi added a double in the game.

Greylock next travels to Mount Anthony for a 7 p.m. game on Friday night.
