PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- West Springfield’s boys soccer team scored on a free kick in the 79th minute to salvage a 1-1 tie against Pittsfield on Friday at Kirvin Park.

The Generals were whistled for a hand ball outside the box in the waning moments to earn the Terriers the free try.

“When you lose a game in the final minute off a free kick it always stings,” PHS coach Andrew Antil said. “However, the teams seemed fairly evenly matched on the day, and we have a lot to be proud of. West Springfield is a strong, talented team and they gave us a tough battle. We obviously would have preferred the win, but we will take the point.”

Pittsfield scored its goal early in the second half on a Carter Matthews penalty kick after West Side was whistled for a hand ball inside the 18.

Avi Snowise made seven saves for the Generals.

Pittsfield (7-1-2) takes a seven-game unbeaten streak into Monday’s rematch at Mount Greylock, which earned a 1-1 tie against PHS in their first meeting.
