Balanced Attack Leads McCann to Victory

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. — Sophomore Damon Couture had a goal in each half, while the Hornets' defense played solid throughout to lead the McCann Tech boys' soccer team to a 4-1 win at Smith Vocational on Friday.

"We always have more possession when we face Smith Voc., and we end up with many scoring opportunities," Hornets head coach Adam Kozik said." It's a nice chance for some of our non-scorers to practice shooting. Every eligible player was able to get some playing time in this away match."

After senior Chad Raimer scored four goals in McCann's first win of the year on Tuesday, the Hornets' offensive attack was much more balanced in the victory over the Vikings. Sophomore forward Jon Leal got things started for McCann (2-1) in the 15th minute, scoring off of an assist from Raimer. Couture increased his team's lead three minutes later by finishing off a pass from classmate Shane Fuller. Smith cut the hosts' lead in half, however, when Nick Adair connected on a penalty kick in the 30th minute.

That was the only blemish for goalie P.J. Laliberte (four saves) and the Hornets' defense, though, which kept a clean slate the rest of the way. The visitors then pulled away in the second half thanks to goals by Couture and Raimer.

McCann next plays at St. Joe's at 4 p.m. on Monday.
