Gutmann's Two Goals Gives Hornets First Win

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The second time around worked a little bit better for the McCann Tech boys' soccer team.

The Hornets dropped a 2-1 decision to St. Mary's in their season opener on Friday but came right back to earn a victory by the same score against Smith Voc. on Tuesday afternoon. Senior captain Nate Gutmann scored both goals for McCann (1-1), the first coming in the seventh minute of the game off of a pass from junior Chad Raimer. Gutmann took the ball, beat Vikings' keeper Josh Harriman (nine saves) one on one and drove a shot into the right side of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Smith came back to tie the game just eight minutes later on a tally by Mike Laizer, but Gutmann would knock in what would be the game winner shortly after halftime. Just over four minutes into the second half, Gutmann took a pass from freshman Shane Fuller, made a quick turnaround at the 18-yard line and driled the ball into the upper-right corner of the net.

"This game was a nice chance for us to work on our midfield play, change up the lineup a bit and gain our first win of the season," Hornets head coach Adam Kozik said.

McCann held the Vikings scorless in the second half thanks to the defensive effort of Garrett LeSage and goalie Connor Vazquez, who stopped 13 Smith shots in the game.

The Hornets next play at St. Joe's at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
