Blue Devils Break Out in Win over Eagles

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- After a tough stretch of games in which it was outscored 23-3, the Drury boys' soccer team broke its four-game losing streak in convincing fashion by scoring a season-high five goals in a 5-2 home win over Mount Everett on Tuesday.

Senior forward Jake Tietgens scored a hat trick to pace the Blue Devils' offense, netting his team-leading eighth, ninth and 10th goals of the season in the process. Drury (3-6-1) opened up a 3-0 lead at halftime and put the game away early by scoring two more times within the first 14 minutes of the second half.

"This was a breakout win for us today," Blue Devils head coach Greg Caproni said. " It was a South Division win we needed. This was the best I've seen my boys possess the ball and move the ball all year. This comes in a time when we need to play our best, with so many South Division games left on our schedule. I look forward to our upcoming game against St. Joe's this week."

Junior Jacob Groves started things off by taking a through ball from Tietgens and burying a shot in the eighth minute of play. Groves then returned the favor 22 minutes later, finding Tietgens with another pass through the Eagles' backline to set up a breakaway goal and give the hosts a 2-0 lead. Drury padded that margin with another strike two minutes before the half when Everett (6-5-2) put in an own goal off a corner kick from junior Ryan Ouimet.

The Blue Devils, which outshot the Eagles 18-5 in the game, kept the pressure on in the second half. Less than two minutes in, senior Riley Nolan chipped a ball over the Everett backline to Tietgens, who found the back of the net for a 4-0 lead. Twelve minutes later, Nolan caught the entire Eagles' team too far up on a corner kick and found Tietgens all alone at midfield. Tietgens beat the Everett goalie to the ball and walked it into the goal for his third tally of the game.

The Eagles did manage to break up the shutout thanks to goals by Sage Angell and Christian Sanchez in the 62nd and 78th minutes of play, but Drury freshman Cameron Lesure still managed to pick up his first varsity win in goal by registering three saves.

The Devils play the Crusaders next in a game at BCC at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
