DALTON, Mass. – Kathryn Perrone scored with 2 minutes, 30 seconds left Tuesday to give the Wahconah girls soccer team a 2-1 win over Agawam.

Perrone took a pass from Dani Barry inside the 18, settled the ball and buried a shot into the back of the net to put Wahconah up for good after the visitors had rallied to tie the game.

“It was a quick back and forth game but our defense handled the pressure well, staying organized and keeping their composure,” Wahconah coach Maggie Rivers said. “I was really impressed with their effort and mental toughness after a very physical and quick game.”

Wahconah went up in the second half when Olivia Gamberoni converted an assist from Vienna Mahar.

But Agawam’s Kyler Warner scored from 5 yards beyond the 18 to tie it.

“Agawam is a well coached team and they pushed hard the whole time,” Rivers said. “The momentum switched back and forth throughout the game. They move the ball well around the back and play every tackle hard. We just pushed through some really tough moments including having a goal called back for offsides and we’re able to compose in the last six minutes.”

Edrianna Collins stopped 12 shots to earn the win in goal.

“I’m really proud of this team and how they pushed and competed the whole time,” Rivers said. “We’ve had a tough week with injuries and COVID but have come out stronger.”

Wahconah (2-3) goes to Hampshire on Friday.
