Majetich Helps Mounties Snap Scoring Slump

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- The defense was always there for the Mount Greylock girls' soccer team, but it was the offense that pretty much disappeared for the Mounties over the past four games. After scoring 12 goals in its first five games, Greylock managed just one goal over its next four matches, resulting in a 0-2-1 record during that stretch.

Alex Majetich took matters into her own hands on Tuesday, however, scoring a hat trick to jumpstart the Mounties' offense and lead her team to a 3-1 road win over Taconic. The senior striker found the back of the net three times in the first 45 minutes of the game, giving Greylock (5-3-2) a comfortable 2-0 lead at halftime and an insurmountable three-goal edge just five minutes into the second half.

"In the wake of an offensive scoring drought, we finally snapped out of our funk with three goals against a tough North Division foe," Mounties head coach Tom Ostheimer said. "Alex had a great day offensively, scoring a hat trick and sealing the victory with her third goal early in the second half."

Majetich received some unexpected help on her first goal of the game in the 15th minute, taking a long punt from Greylock goalie Margot Besnard and scoring on a breakaway. It was the second time this year the Mounties' keeper picked up an assist on that kind of play. Besnard also made four saves on the day and allowed just one goal, a late strike by Angela Pannesco with two minutes left in the game.

Majetich doubled Greylock's lead in the 30th minute and scored her final goal of the game five minutes into the second half on an assist from junior Miranda Bucky. Ashton McLaughlin stopped eight shots in goal for the Braves, who fell to 2-6 with the loss.

The Mounties return to action with a home game against Lee at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
