Mounties Need Just One Half to Bounce St. Joe's

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The Mount Greylock girls' soccer team got an early lead on Saint Joseph's on Thursday and then got off the field earlier than expected in a 3-0 home win shortened by brutal playing conditions.

Battling cold temperatures and flurries that had dropped a half inch of snow on the ground, the Mounties (10-5-2) scored three times in the first half before both coaches and the referees decided the conditions were not suitable for playing soccer after halftime. Both teams played 12 seconds of the second half just to make the game official, and Greylock came away with its 10th win of the season while also staying alive in the race for the South Division title.

With a record of 7-1-2 in the division, Tom Ostheimer's club now must wait for the result of the Drury-Hoosac Valley game on Friday afternoon. If the Blue Devils win or the Hurricanes earn at least a tie, the Mounties will earn a share of the South title. If Hoosac wins the game, however, it will win the division title outright.

Greylock stayed alive in the race on Thursday thanks to a pair of goals from sophomore Sophie Leamon. The Mounties forward got her team on the board early, scoring off of a pass from junior Alex Majetich in only the fifth minute of the game. Majetich then netted her team-leading ninth goal of the season in the 17th minute thanks to a feed from sophomore midfielder Miranda Bucky. Leamon later padded Greylock's lead with an unassisted tally five and half minutes before halftime.

Junior goalkeeper Margot Besnard only had to make one save to earn her eighth shutout of the season. Kendall Smith, meanwhile, was a busy girl in net for the Crusaders (4-11-2), stopping 13 shots in just one half of play.

The Mounties close out the regular season with a home game against Wahconah at 6 p.m. on Monday night.
