WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Pittsfield High girls soccer team defeated Mount Greylock Friday night in what started out as an even battle.

Both teams moved the ball well and had great opportunities to put the ball in the net. But in the second half the Generals stepped up and put the game away, 5-1.

First half we were kind of flat, this is our third game this week,” Pittsfield coach Andy Walusczko said. “In the second half, we picked up and we were able to create a lot of opportunities and we scored quickly.”

Pittsfield got its first goal off a mistake in the 18 by the Mounties. Amanda Wright was able to finish it off a pass from Ilana Albert.

Greylock responded quickly, moving the ball from the middle of the field to the outside corners. Freshman Caroline Flynn received the ball just outside the 18 and was able to place it high and to the far corner, tying the game up.

Pittsfield scored once more before half off a pass from senior Trinity Cookis to Albert, putting the Generals ahead, 2-1, going into the second half.

The visitors took control in the second half, netting three more goals from Albert, Wright, and a beautiful header from Casey Poplaski off of a corner kick.

MountGreylock didn’t back down and had a few chances to put a few more in the back of the net, but Pittsfield’s defense held its own along with goalie Allie Hunt.

We had a lot more opportunities than we had against them in the past,” Mount Greylock coach Tom Ostheimer said. “They controlled the second half, but we can take some good from this game.”

Ostheimer was pleased with his team’s performance against the second-ranked team in Western Mass. Mount Greylock will look to continue moving the ball and placing it like it did on Friday in hopes for a win Monday afternoon against St. Mary’s.

Pittsfield will host Mahar Tuesday.
