Greylock Looks Good in Tie with Wahconah

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- After a brief hiccup last week, the Mount Greylock girls' soccer team continued its late-season surge with a 1-1 tie against Wahconah on Wednesday.

It was the third point the Mounties have earned against a North Division opponent this season and it was another strong outing by Tom Ostheimer's team since losing 2-0 to Hoosac Valley last Monday. Since that loss, Greylock has gone 2-0-1 and earned a share of the South Division title thanks to Drury's 2-1 win over Hoosac on Friday. In their last six matches, the Mounties have gone 4-1-1 to close out the regular season on a high note.

Greylock finished the season with a record of 10-5-3 and now will wait to see where it is seeded in the upcoming Division 2 Western Mass. tournament.

A tie against the Warriors should help the Mounties' placement, and they can thank two players in particular for that accomplishment. Junior goalkeeper Margot Besnard made 14 saves to keep Greylock in the game, while classmate and stopper Alexa Adams played solid on both sides of the ball. It was Adams' goal just two and half minutes into the second half that gave the Mounties a 1-0 lead. She took a shot from 18 yards out that beat Wahconah goalie Kelsey Yarmey (seven saves).

Despite holding a 14-3 edge in corner kicks, the Warriors (8-3-5) couldn't net the equalizer until Katie Dumas nailed a blistering shot from 15 yards out that sailed over Besnard's head and into the goal with just 2:33 left on the clock.

"Wahconah controlled play but not the scoreboard," Ostheimer said. "This was a very physical game, and we look forward to a possible rematch with them in the Western Mass. tournament."
