Mount Everett Girls Down Hampden Charter

07:31PM / Wednesday, September 16, 2015

SHEFFIELD, Mass. -- Gwendolyn Carpenter scored a goal and added an assist to lead the Mount Everett girls soccer team to a 5-1 win over Hampden Charter on Wednesday.

The Eagles scored the game's first goal midway through the first half, but the rest of the scoring came after the break -- first on a Carpenter goal assisted by Lauren Edwards to make it a 2-0 game.

It was 3-0 thanks to Mount Everett's Maya Neski before the visitors were able to get on the board.

"The girls played very well this afternoon, although our touches on the ball need work," Mount Everett coach Jess Murtagh said. "We have a lot of new people on the team, but are really starting to blend well on the field. Hampden Charter's keeper was great so that was a good challenge for our offensive line."

After Hampden Charter cut the lead to two goals, Emily Coon and Hanna Steurernagle added some insurance for the Eagles (2-0).

Murtagh credited sweeper Maura Robitaille with strong play in the back to limit Hampden to just six shots on goal against Mount Everett keeper Madison Ullrich.

Mount Everett travels to Lenox on Thursday to take on the Millionaires.
